European Migration Network – Malta National Contact Point – Annual Conference – 2013
The Malta National Contact Point of the European Migration Network organised its Annual Conference on the 2nd December 2013 at the Westin Dragonara Hotel. The theme for the conference was ‘Migration Dynamics of a European Island State’. The programme was divided in two parts. During the first part, Assistant Director (Third Country Nationals), Ministry for Home Affairs and National Security, Mr Julian Micallef gave an overview of the activities of the network in Malta. Three students gave a presentation of their findings in their research they presented for their thesis. Ms Nathalie Grima, Masters in Sociology at the University of Malta, spoke on Locating the ‘Arab Spring’: Lived experiences of contemporary politics among Arabs in Malta. Ms Suelle Micallef Marmara’, Masters in Transcultural Counselling at the University of Malta, spoke on ‘The Effect of Immigration on the Pyschosocial Development of Adoloscents’ and Ms Justine Cuschieri, Masters in European Politics, Economics and Law at the University of Malta, presented her thesis on ‘The Dynamics of Asylum and Burden Sharing – Case Studies of Malta and Cyprus. Ms Mona Rogong, President of the Filippino Contract Workers Association in Malta, spoke on the Philippine Nationals working in Malta
During the second part of the programme Ms Josephine Vella from the Non Contributory Benefits Section, Head Office and Mr Anthony Cesare, Assistant Director (Customer Care), Social Security Department, Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity, spoke on the ‘Third Country Nationals’ access to Social Security’. Mr Luca Visentini, Confederal Secretary from the European Trade Union Confederation, spoke on ‘Migration and Economic Recession: Balancing the Economic Approach with the Workers’ Rights’. Dr Christopher Wilson, Professorial Fellow, Department of Anthropology, Nuffield College, University of Oxford, gave a presentation on ‘Replacement Migration: a remedy for Europe?’. Ms Camille Schmoll, Lecturer (Geography), University of Paris Diderot and Visiting Fellow at the Ecole Francaise de Rome, concluded the conference with her presentation on ‘Irregular Migrations to Southern European Islands’. The conference ended with a networking lunch.
